What motivated you to come to Japan and what was the purpose of your stay?
After graduating from high school at the age of 18, I worked part-time in construction-related sites. Later, I started my own construction company (a subcontractor), but due to the impact of COVID-19, the management costs soared, making it difficult to continue with the original business model. Faced with issues like a shortage of workers, I decided to study business management at a university to solve these problems, which is why I came to Japan. The reason I chose Japan is because it was easily accessible from China. Since my arrival, I have mainly been focusing on preparing for university entrance exams. I find grammar to be the most challenging part.

How long have you lived in Japan?
I came to Japan in October 2022, so it’s been a year since I arrived. (I studied Japanese for three months in China before coming here.)
Why did you choose to live along the Seibu Line?
Before coming to Japan, I left the arrangements to a study abroad agency, with instructions to avoid first-floor apartments, look for affordable rent, and ensure good access to school. While properties around Shin-Okubo Station were also recommended, I chose the one near Shimo-Ochiai Station because it was closer to the station (a 2-minute walk).

What do you like about the station near where you live?

I’m from the countryside, so I love quiet places. The area around the station where I live is quiet and safe. Although there are not many stores, it’s convenient for living since there are supermarkets and drugstores around the station. I don’t eat out much, so having a convenience store nearby is handy. One thing I find a bit troublesome about living in Japan is the frequent delivery of flyers and door-to-door salespeople, haha. I don’t have any friends in this area, but I’m focused on my studies, so I don’t feel lonely.
Any favorite spots around the station where you live?
There’s a diner called Sumiyaki Ochiai that I frequently visit because it’s affordable and delicious. I love yakitori. I also enjoy drinking alcohol, but I’ve been restraining myself because of exam preparations.

You likely use the Seibu Line to commute. How convenient is it for you?

Even on days when I don’t have school, I often go to the Shinjuku area, so it’s very convenient. For international students, I recommend Takadanobaba Station. It has many shops (including Chinese cuisine), making it a comfortable place to live. I wanted to live near Takadanobaba Station, but the rent was too high, so I gave up.
